Introduction
Poverty and deprivation aren’t just economic issues – they limit opportunities and prospects for children and young people, damage quality of life for families and harm long-term health and life expectancy. Poverty and deprivation are a part of life for many people in Cumbria – including both those in and out of work . Low pay, limited job security and the necessity of taking multiple part-time jobs are a feature of some of the county’s economic sectors including tourism (particularly hotel and catering) and agriculture (particularly upland farming), retail and social care.
