Unemployment in Cumbria

Headlines - August 2010 (reporting July 2010 figures)

The July 2010 unemployment and vacancy figures were released by the Office for National Statistics on 11th August 2010. The JSA Claimant Count was taken on 8th July 2010 and the vacancy count was for the month to 2nd July 2010.

Please note that ONS has changed the definition of working age to 16-64 for both males and females (previously it was 16-64 for males, 16-59 for females). The count is unaffected but the denominator used to calculate rates has changed. The change has been applied retrospectively and therefore the figures within this release are consistent but will not be consistent with previous publications. We have also moved over the more recent Travel to Work Areas from this briefing onwards.

The JSA claimant count  in Cumbria rose by 67 between June and July 2010 to reach 7,639. The claimant count rose in Allerdale, Barrow, Carlisle and South Lakeland but fell in Copeland and Eden. The count fell regionally and nationally. Between the same two months last year the count in Cumbria also rose by 108. The JSA claimant rate  in Cumbria in July 2010 was unchanged at 2.5%. The rate was also unchanged regionally and nationally but remains higher than locally at 4.0% and 3.6% respectively.

Compared to a year ago, the JSA claimant count in Cumbria is 305 lower, a decrease of 8.4% over the year (UK annual decrease 0.1%). The claimant rate  in Cumbria is down 0.1 from a year ago, the national rate is down 0.3 compared to last year.
