The learning programme of a child in the National Curriculum is divided into age groups otherwise known as “Key Stages”.

Early Years Foundation Stage– This is a statutory framework for children’s learning and development and welfare from birth to the end of the academic year in which they turn 5.   It covers six areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (3 scales)
  • Communication, Language and Literacy (4 scales)
  • Problem-solving, reasoning and numeracy (3 scales)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world (1 scale)
  • Physical Development (1 scale)
  • Creative Development (1 scale)

Key Stage 1: Also known as Infants, age of children 5-7 and year group 1-2

Key Stage 2: Also known as Juniors, age of children 7-11 and year group 3-6

Key Stage 4: Also known as Secondary School, age of children 14-16 and year group 10-11.   This is GCSE level.

Key Stage 3 was not examined in this process as there is no longer any formal assessment that takes place; instead it is now carried out by teacher assessment.

Use the list below to access a range of data spreadsheets containing pupil trend data at District level compared to County and National averages for Early Years Foundation Stage, KS1, KS2 and KS4/GCSE.
