British Crime Survey

The British Crime Survey is an important source of information about the levels of crime and public attitudes to crime and other Home Office issues. The results play an important role in informing Home Office policy.

The survey is carried out on an annual basis.   It measures the amount of crime in England and Wales by asking people about crimes they have experienced and which they may not have officially reported. Therefore this is an important alternative to police records.

In addition to the BCS, the Home Office will now make available National Statistics supplementary bulletins.  These supplementary bulletins will report on additional analysis which isn't included in the annual British Crime Survey.
